Mapping Language Skills in Key Sectors
The mapping of language skills is vital in identifying language use. Although language capability can be assessed yearly through languages labour market intelligence, by gathering and analyzing existing skills in the population and also developing skills through the education system, there has been a gap in identifying language capability in industry.
With a view to narrowing this gap and providing a benchmark to allow future trend forecasts of existing and developing language skills in industry a series of online surveys were conducted targeting six key priority sectors.

Language Strategy
The Regional Language Network North West has delivered its North West Language Strategy for Embedding Languages in Key Sectors, including its assessment of language skills at Liverpool John Lennon and Manchester airports. Sectors covered include tourism and hospitality, construction, building services, food and drink, engineering and passenger transport.
Working with funders the North West Learning & Skills Council as well as with the NWDA and other partners, the RLN NW has been examining ways to take forward the development of the language strategy for the region, which include: studies to assess language skills and cultural development needs in various sectors; the development, pilot delivery and evaluation of toolkits to address those needs (workshops, glossaries, training packages and others); the mapping of language skills in the region, including in specific sectors; and awareness-raising around the importance of language skills and cultural awareness in business.

Chemical Study
The Regional Language Network North West has published the results of its chemical sector survey commissioned by the North West Regional Development Agency (NWDA), carried out with strategic support from Chemicals Northwest. As the chemical sector was identified by the NWDA as a key sector for international competitiveness – it is the region’s largest exporter – the RLN was interested to hear about companies’ experiences in order to identify specific language- and culture-related needs in the sector.
