Language and Film Talent Awards

As election fever grips us all, we’ve decided to open up this year’s Language and Film Talent Awards (LAFTAs) to a People’s Vote. We’re encouraging people to exercise their democratic rights and choose their favourite of the shortlisted video clips.

The LAFTAs aim to get young people being creative with languages by making short films on why languages are important. Whether it’s to chat to Olympic stars or to avoid a disaster, it’s clear that these budding film makers saw lots of value in speaking other languages, and had lots of fun engaging with the idea.

We received over 100 entries and our regional judges have now watched all the clips and selected a shortlist of 25. The shortlist is now with our panel of national judges, including Chairman of the Olympics committee, Sebastian Coe, and actor of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fame, Freddie Highmore. Winners will be announced in July at a red carpet event in London.

In the meantime, we’d love for you to cast your own votes via our website. Whether it's action movies that take your fancy, or you’re just a sucker for romance, we’re sure you’ll find one that stands out for you. You can watch the shortlisted clips and cast your vote here.

At the same ceremony in July, CILT will be presenting the awards for the 14 to 19 National Awards for Excellence in Language Learning - to highlight even more great work being produced by languages students in the UK. We’ve been really impressed by the entries, which range from multimedia presentations and videos to literature essays and film reviews.

The deadline for the Award for Community and Heritage Languages has been extended until 21 May 2010 so there’s still time to enter! For more information visit CILT website.
