Language Skills Data

Ongoing Activity

This development is supported by the North West Development Agency (NWDA) as part of its Internationalisation Strategy to prepare the region to compete more successfully in the global market.

Information on language skills available in the region is also valuable for inward investment purposes, as many companies considering rellocating into the region will need to know whether they can employ people with language skills in combination with other skills such as ICT, accounting or legal.

We have access to a variety of language data sources that allow us to respond to any enquiries relating to existing language skills across the North West.

Language Skills in Priority Sectors in NW

The mapping of language skills is vital in identifying language use.  Although language capability can be assessed yearly through languages labour market intelligence, by gathering and analyzing existing skills in the population and also developing skills through the education system, there has been a gap in identifying language capability in industry.

With a view to narrowing this gap and providing a benchmark to allow future trend forecasts of existing and developing language skills in industry a series of online surveys were conducted targeting six key priority sectors.

We would like to thank all of those who responded to the series of online surveys during 2008. The majority of respondents wished to enter the prize draw for an i-Pod. The draw was done in 2009, following the publication of the report.

The winner of the prize draw and lucky winner of an i-Pod Touch is A Bryning, from Simon Fenton Partnership LLP in Manchester, Financial and Professional Services Sector.

Sectors surveyed included Digital and Creative Industries (42% of responses); Financial and Professional Services Sector (29%); Food and Drink (10%); Energy and Environmental Technologies (9%); Advanced Engineering and Materials (8%) and Biomedical (2%)
