Chinese Language Learning
China is one of the fastest growing markets in the world, offering huge trade and investment opportunities for British companies (UKTI website). China attracts more foreign investment than any other developing country and also has one of the fastest rates of economic growth with average annual growth over the past 19 years of about 8% per annum and low inflation (Link2Exports website).
The predicted growth in the Chinese economy and the increase in trade between China and the UK emphasize the need for Chinese language skills and language learning in the UK.
- GCSE Chinese achievements in the North West fell by 6% between 2001 and 2004 (decrease of 8 people).
- In the North West, between 1997 and 2003, there has been a substantial increase (163.9%) in the number of Chinese A-Level achievements; 36 in 1997, 73 in 2001 and 95 in 2003.
- In 2001, there were 80 graduates from UK higher education institutions (HEIs) who studied a substantial element of Chinese in their programme of study. 58.8% of these are from Northern HEIs.
